Warmer August positive for summer clearance

LAST AUGUST, TEMPERATURES TRENDED THE hottest in 15 years with all but two days trending hotter than the year prior. The exception was the immediate West Coast as California trended the coldest in more than 20 years. Hot weather was a positive for pool and beach supplies, but a negative for other outdoor categories as many consumers hunkered down in air conditioning during the intense heat. The cool weather along the West Coast was also a negative for outdoor-living categories.
August 2011 will trend cooler than last year across the Eastern U.S. with the greatest threat of below-normal temperatures in the North Central states and the Northeast. The West, South Central states and Southeast will have better odds for a warmer-than-normal August, a positive for summer clearance. The Southeast and Rocky Mountain states will see drier conditions this year which will help boost the outdoor-living categories. The 2011 Atlantic hurricane season is expected to be more active than normal with the highest risk area of impact for August in South Texas.
