COLOGNE, Germany - Consumers are longing for a place to get away from it all, a homely, cozy oasis complete with the outdoor living feel-good factor - particularly in the troubled times of the Euro and bank crisis.
What could be better suited for this than their own green surroundings - regardless of whether it is in the garden or on the balcony? In Germany alone, last year around 30% of teens over 14 devoted themselves to the garden theme in their leisure time. And there is no end in sight to this boom. The potential of the garden market is far from exhausted, say the convinced experts from IFH Retail Consultants.
For 2012, they are predicting growth of 0.7% to 18.04 billion Euro because in the outdoor furniture sector alone, 8.6 million households are currently planning new purchases. The focal point is casual-cool lounges, dainty sofas and armchairs along with products with a total indoor look. What exactly will be in demand in the outdoor sector over the coming years will be shown by approximately 2,000 suppliers at the garden fair spoga+gafa from Sept. 2-4 in Cologne.
2012-13 top trend: Going casual
The more strongly the garden is developing into a living space, the more consumers want to make it homelike and cozy outdoors. That particularly applies to younger consumers who want to chill out and totally relax. In response, manufacturers are presenting casual-cool lounge armchairs and cushions along with playful creations which invite relaxed seating for the 2012/13 outdoor season. In this connection, they want high quality and design - without creating a rigid impression. The top advantage here: As dynamic seating landscapes, the furnishings can be repeatedly combined in any variation and are thus perfectly adapted to every open-air event.
Forms in demand: Filigree lightness
Joie de vivre all the way: Outdoor furniture with an airy appeal is ensuring the right feeling and vibes on the balcony and patio. Instead of continuous, voluminous back rests and legs, it comes in an elegant-transparent design. Here, the spectrum of filigree textures extends from the rod and rung look through to textile lacing and mesh optics up to metal grid forms. Within this framework, a classic is celebrating its comeback: the spaghetti chair. The soft strings are once again en vogue in 2012-13. Thanks to new durable materials, they are not only clearly hard-wearing and higher quality, they are also opening up innovative design possibilities. Manufacturers also are returning to teak, lending it a very modern touch through fresh material combinations.
High quality: Absolutely Indoor
The borders between indoor and outdoor have been increasingly merging for several years. Over the next season, this trend will reach an exciting climax. This applies on one hand to the look, which picks up typical forms like the classic rocking chair, and on the other, to materials. For example, sofa covers look and feel like interior fabrics or leather. A complete outdoor living room is then created with the help of carpets, lamps, cushions and small furniture items. Manufacturers are now offering whole rooms: modern pavilions with roof and side walls create a safe, secure refuge outdoors.
Trend color: Blue
As before, an absolutely essential feature of the outdoor sector is white, beige and brown tones. They have an elegant and natural effect . In addition, last year's blue trend color is now conquering the outdoor stage. In keeping with the continuing trend towards the very popular Nordic maritime look, it is synonymous with peace and quiet, a feeling of warmth and security and harmony as well as freedom. Because furniture and accessories in blue inspire dreaming about the sea or the wide, open sky. As blue goes together especially well with white and beige, models in this color can be most effectively combined with the popular natural tones.
Top leisure pleasure: Barbecue convenience
Barbecuing is one of the most popular open-air leisure pastimes for the Germans. In this connection, the main aim is a convivial get-together for fun and the pleasure of barbecuing. An increasing number of women are discovering barbecuing for themselves. Correspondingly, both the look and the functionality are changing. Appliances are becoming stylish eye-catchers in attractive, cool trend colors and offering a wide range of possibilities for healthy, diverse cuisine. Over and above that, complete barbecue centers are making increasing inroads - including storage modules for food and even special ice cube containers. As far as barbecuing and frying itself is concerned, the right accessories are available to cater to every taste, from the frying basket for chicken right up to the popcorn-maker. For total indoor convenience, every manufacturer is now offering outdoor kitchens in the form of modern pavilion systems.
