Schnadig expanding High Point showroom by 14,000 square feet

HIGH POINT — Case goods and upholstery resource Schnadig International is expanding its showroom here by 14,000 square feet this market to a second floor in the International Home Furnishings Center, directly above its longstanding space on the fifth floor of the IHFC's Commerce wing.
The two floors, with a total of 38,000 square feet, will be connected by a wide staircase, part of the construction that was under way here this week.
The company said the expansion is needed because it has added new portfolios, or product lines, since current management headed by Jeff Young, chairman and CEO, took over Schnadig three years ago. The four major portfolios include Lauren Ralph Lauren and Caracole at the high end, and Compositions and Schnadig at the company's lower price level.
The company said the added product quickly consumed its available IHFC space, which made it difficult to show both new introductions and product from the previous market. There was no space to show product more than a year old.
"We had quite a few dealers asking to see product from in-line collections and items we simply did not have room to display in our showroom," said Young. "In addition, Richard Feng, CEO and chairman of Markor, our parent company, encouraged us to increase our Lauren Ralph Lauren and Caracole space so that each portfolio could be shown in its entirety. That clinched the need for expansion, and the logical way to go was up."
The higher-price Caracole and medium-price Caracole Light and Lauren Ralph Lauren will be shown on the fifth floor, with Caracole gaining 5,000 square feet, for a total of 9,000, and Lauren increasing from 4,400 square feet to 6,200. The space will allow the full lines of each to be shown for the first time.
The Schnadig mix of case goods and upholstery and the more opulent Compositions line of exposed wood upholstery and correlating tables will be located on the sixth floor.
Handicapped access will be available via the alley on the sixth floor, and attendants will be standing by to assist and direct market visitors, the company said.
"We're proud of the fact that our business is growing," said Young. "It's been an economically challenging three years for everyone and to increase our sales we've had to take market share from others. Much of our success has been driven by our entry point Schnadig collections, our expanded Compositions upholstery (which has incorporated a more upscale look in recent markets) and, of course, our Lauren and Caracole increases, which have far exceeded our original projections."
He said that the company's strategic relationship of its partnership with domestic manufacturer Key City in North Wilkesboro, N.C. "has helped us gain substantial placements of Lauren upholstery with three accounts. Plus, we are now beginning to realize volume in special orders for Lauren custom fabrics four our existing Lauren dealer network.
"Working with Key City the past nine months has given us the confidence to move forward with the introduction of our Caracole Custom Upholstery program this market to satisfy the obvious demand for additional fabrics in that high-fashion upholstery line," Young added.
