Cold trend continues this month

Early in the month of January 2007, bitter cold temperatures across the western United States began to spread eastward. Cold weather replaced the record warmth in the West by the end of the month, resulting in the second greatest year-over-year change toward colder weather in 113 years of January records.

Warm weather immediately after the holidays brought increased store traffic and greater than expected sales, while the cold surge during the later half  of the month and pent-up demand for winter seasonal items resulted in more good news

January 2008 will start off cold in the East, continuing a trend that was established in November and December. The cold trends will moderate significantly and shift westward by the end of the month. Store traffic will plunge once the holidays are over as consumers hunker down at home watching the snow fly. Retailers should be planning for the first taste of spring-like weather in the Deep South in February this year, with the hint of spring arriving two to three weeks earlier than last year.
