2013 National Hardware Show hosting multiple awards programs

NORWALK, Conn. - Awards programs recognizing everyone from young retailers to industry veterans will take place during the upcoming National Hardware Show, to be held May 7-9 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

The show, which draws exhibitors and attendees from all over the world, will also hold several annual meetings and company receptions.

"Our awards programs offer a great way to honor individuals who have gone above and beyond and are doing great things for the home improvement industry," said Sonya Ruff Jarvis, vice president of attendee programs for the National Hardware Show. "Because the National Hardware Show is a global event, it's the perfect opportunity for those individuals and companies from around the world to get together and acknowledge those who have done so much to improve the industry."

The National Hardware Show's awards programs include:


7:30-8:30 p.m. Young Retailer of the Year Awards Ceremony. The Renaissance Ballroom

The Young Retailer of the Year Awards, presented by the North American Retail Hardware Association (NRHA), recognizes young, aspiring retailers, honors them for their outstanding achievements and encourages talented young people to pursue a career in the retail hardware field. The program is now in its 17th year and, to date, has honored more than 100 young retailers.

"This is one of our most fun events at the National Hardware Show," said Bill Lee, president and CEO of NRHA. "We love hearing the stories of these young entrepreneurs, who are the future of the home improvement industry. It's very uplifting, and their stories are inspiring."

2-2:45 p.m. Packaging and Merchandising Awards. NRHA Stage

The Packaging and Merchandising Awards recognize the industry's best product packaging and merchandising. Manufacturers have submitted products and merchandising displays to NRHA, and at this award's ceremony, NRHA will introduce this year's winners and will offer a summary of the judges' commentary and emerging packaging trends.

"The National Hardware Show is the perfect place for the industry's association of independent retailers to meet with manufacturers about packaging and merchandising methods," said Scott Wright, NRHA's vice president of member services. "The Packaging and Merchandising Awards offer a way for manufacturers to get feedback on the best ways to sell products and make sure consumers are informed about those products."


7:30-9 a.m. 29th Annual Golden Hammer Awards. Room N253

The 29th annual Golden Hammer Awards, presented by Home Channel News magazine, will honor the industry's movers and shakers. The awards will be presented in 30 categories to a list of vendors who have been selected by their industry peers.

This year, Ray Griffith, retired CEO of Ace Hardware, will be inducted into the Home Channel Hall of Fame. Nebraska-based builders Kearney will receive the Tools of the Trade Award. The Springfield, Mass.-based Rocky's Ace Hardware will receive the Retailer of the Year Award.

Griffith will join previous Golden Hammer Hall of Fame honorees Bob Taylor, Do it Best Corp. CEO (2012); Larry Stone of Lowe's Cos. (2011) and Patt Farrah, a co-founder of The Home Depot (2010).

"The Golden Hammer Awards recognize the best of the best in home improvement," said Ken Clark, editor of Home Channel News. "We believe we have assembled a field of high-profile and high-performing retailers and suppliers for another great Golden Hammer event."

11:45-11:55 a.m. PDRA Scholarship Presentation. NRHA Stage

The Paint & Decorating Retailers Association (PDRA) will award a scholarship, which the National Hardware Show has sponsored for the past five years.

"The PDRA scholarship that the National Hardware Show very generously sponsors is near and dear to our organization and industry," said Jeff Baggaley, president of PDRA. "This is our way to give back to our industry by helping generate excitement through this initiative and perhaps in helping today's student youth, attracting new and youthful talent to our industry.

"We provide this scholarship and the opportunity it can represent to a deserving and talented student in hopes of making a difference in a young person's path in life. The PDRA is the industry organization that strives to support and educate our membership through a myriad of programs and initiatives."

1-1:45 p.m. NRHA Top Gun Awards. NRHA Stage

This is the industry's chance to hear what today's top independent retailers are thinking. NRHA and Hardware Retailing magazine will once again assemble a panel of the industry's most successful and innovative independent retailers to share their stories and thoughts on the industry.

This year's Top Gun class includes: Tim Buchheit of Buchheit Stores, Bruce Ellis of Builders Do it Center, Dennis Stine of Stine Home + Yard and George Preckwinkle of Bishop Ace Hardware.

Past Top Gun honorees have included Rocco Falcone from Rocky's Ace Hardware, Scott Parker from Parker Lumber, Doug Gregory from Morrison Terrebonne Lumber and CNRG and Ron Cicunetti from Ron's Home Hardware, among others.

2-2:15 p.m. Homewares Show Awards. NRHA Stage

HomeWorld Business magazine and the National Hardware Show will be recognizing the best of the best in homewares product design and innovation. The winners for the Homewares Awards are selected by a distinguished panel of homewares retailers and represent the best-in-class product innovators within the industry.

Manufacturers from around the world submitted their products for consideration for this award. The 2013 Gold, Silver, Bronze and Honorable Mention winners will be announced live at the show.

Judges for this show will include Greg DeLoia of QVC and Tony Luckie, executive director of Storage Sources Group, among others.

"Innovative, new products have been catalysts for renewed growth in the housewares and home improvement markets," said Peter Giannetti, editor-in-chief of HomeWorld Business. "HomeWorld Business shares the National Hardware Show's commitment to helping retailers identify these new products and sales growth opportunities."

2:15-2:30 p.m. Lawn, Garden and Outdoor Living Innovation Awards. NRHA Stage

This awards program, sponsored by Casual Living, is back for the third year, and it's focused on innovative new products in the growing lawn and garden and outdoor living categories. Winners are selected from thousands of products in these categories on display at the National Hardware Show.

Products are voted on by a panel of industry judges, who include Norman Hamilton, publisher of Casual Living and Rick Pontz, president of The Lawn & Garden-Performance Group LLC, and awards are presented to Gold, Silver, Bronze and Honorable Mention winners.

2:30-2:45 p.m. New Product Launch Spotlight Awards. NRHA Stage

This awards program will showcase new products that haven't yet hit the 2013 market and have no pre-negotiations or pre-sales. Browse the display area and view the winning products voted on by a panel of industry judges.

Judges include Christine Aguilera, president of SkyMall, Inc.; Dave Christmas, president of Distribution America; and Rob Reiling, merchandise manager/buyer with PRO Group; among others. These awards are being sponsored by SkyMall.

"We are thrilled to participate in the New Product Launch Spotlight Awards, where we know we will see a ton of interesting new inventions. 3-3:30 p.m. National Hardware Show All-American Awards. Made in USA-Central Hall

The Made in the USA brand will be announcing the winners of the National Hardware Show All-American Awards, which will be given for products that are Made in the USA.

4-4:30 p.m. Game Ball Awards. Silver Parking Lot

The Game Ball Awards, sponsored by Tailgater Magazine, will be awarded for the most innovative products in the Outdoors, Tailgate & Recreation category.

4:45 p.m.-4:55 p.m. New Product World Awards by DIY. NRHA Stage

These awards will be given to the most unique new products at the National Hardware Show.

5-6:30 p.m. NRHA Retailers' Choice Awards. NRHA Stage

For more than 30 years, Hardware Retailing magazine has been recognizing exhibitors' innovation and showcasing the best of the best products at the National Hardware Show with its Retailers' Choice Awards.

The winners are selected by a panel of distinguished retailers who browse the show floor, looking for products that are unique, innovative and stand out from the rest.

"Retailers who want to find and stock new, unique products are excited to see what products are at the National Hardware Show, and they look forwarding to rewarding the ones they find most innovative," said Dan Tratensek, publisher of Hardware Retailing. "It's also a good way to thank the manufacturers who are the driving force behind these new products."
