Wal-Mart remains No.1 in outdoor sales

Other big box players change rankings

Staff -- Casual Living, 8/1/2006 12:00:00 AM

The top five big box retailers took a larger share of 2005 outdoor furniture sales, weighing in at nearly $1.6 billion by offering selections to appeal to the broadest range of consumer tastes.

While Wal-Mart ranks as the top discount department store player with its Better Homes & Gardens and Home Trends brands, the other four discounters are jockeying for position.

Home Depot climbed to the No. 2 spot in 2005 outdoor furniture sales and replaced Lowe's, which slipped to third place in the rankings. Kmart's position at No. 4 was closely followed by Target, which recently increased its outdoor furniture profile by adding the Smith & Hawken brand along with offering Thomas O'Brien designs for outdoor accent tables, bistro sets, sofas, stacking chairs and other furnishings.
