Weather Trends - August 2005 vs. 2004

August 2005

A year ago, August ranked as the 7th coldest and 22nd wettest in 110 years for the nation as a whole. This had a big negative impact on industry retail sales which were the worst in more than 20 years, due in part to the unfavorable weather and several land falling hurricanes in Florida. Much better news this year with a complete change toward much warmer and generally drier weather. This will favor stronger sales for outdoor living furniture categories. A transition toward cooler weather is likely right around Labor Day, except in the deep South. So, if steep markdowns were needed last year to trim inventories, they most likely won't be needed this year as the weather will certainly drive higher demand.
