Joan Blutter, founder of Blutter/Shiff Design Associates, passed away on Sunday evening, Nov. 15. An innovator in the interior design community, Blutter has invested her time and energy into expanding and growing the interior design industry.
With more than 40 years of service, Blutter/Shiff, originally Joan Blutter Associates, has been located at The Merchandise Mart in Chicago and has had a sterling reputation as one of the top interior design firms in the country. Her impeccable sense of style and natural beauty earned her many clients. Her warm outgoing personality turned initial business relationships into lifelong, caring friendships.

In her two terms as president of the Illinois Chapter of ASID, Blutter’s leadership has brought the Illinois chapter of ASID to The Merchandise Mart, a relationship that has lasted for more than 30 years. All her hard work has earned her many acclaims, including the Who’s Who in American Women and her Outstanding Achievement Award in 1985.
“Joan Blutter was a pillar in the design industry and her loss will be felt greatly at the Mart and throughout the entire design community,” said John H Brennen III, executive vice president, MMPI.
Originally born and educated in London, England, Blutter came to the United States as a young woman, and married Melvyn Blutter. She is the mother of Janet Blutter Shiff, a partner in her design firm, and a son, Steven.
