Scaling Back

Trends

Chris Gigley and Courtney M. Paschal -- Casual Living, 11/1/2008 12:00:00 AM

Bigger isn't necessarily better. One trend at the International Casual Furniture & Accessories Market in September was European-scale outdoor furniture, pieces smaller than typical chairs and tables in the U.S. market. Two forces drive the trend. One, consumers perceiving, right or wrong, that less furniture means less money. Two, designers giving more attention to urbanites and their more modest outdoor living spaces. Here are several collections that reflect the trend.

Kettler

Kettler's stainless steel Avanti chair, previously available as a smaller European-styled version, also is available as Avanti PLUS — 15% larger — and in both textilene and weave styles.

The Zanzibar Collection bar from Cabana Joe's for Acacia Home & Garden is ideal for smaller spaces such as coastal condominium balconies or urban patios.

Reserve Collection
Fairfield by Agio, part of the company's Reserve Collection, is designed for smaller outdoor settings. The line features a two-tone variegated weave and pieces that include a living room grouping and swivel seat dining for two.

Modest-sized Rendezvous nesting tables from Fermob offer obvious space-saving benefits for consumers who need it. Rice grain perforations create a unique look, and the tables are available in a rainbow of colors.

The Emeral seven-piece chat collection from Jensen Leisure Furniture is crafted from FSC-certified Ipe wood and displays a more contemporary design.
