The 2008 Design Excellence Awards, saluting the best of new product design, were presented during the Market Welcome Party on the Merchandise Mart’s 7th floor. Other industry excellence awards for manufacturer leadership and showroom merchandising also were presented in the Design Excellence Gallery.
The winner of the Design Excellence Lillian B. Winchester Best of Show Award will be named Wednesday night during the 49th Annual Apollo Awards at the Navy Pier Grand Ballroom. The Apollo Awards are the main event to recognize retail excellence and honor lifetime achievements in the casual furniture industry. Models will also take the runway as part of an alfresco outdoor fabric fashion show. Tickets are required for the Apollo Awards event, hosted by the International Casual Furnishings Association and Merchandise Mart Properties, Inc.
This year’s Design Excellence competition attracted 145 entries, setting a new record. The panel of judges for the annual awards included designers Grace Sielaff, Julia DeLeon and John West along with editors Jan Parr of Chicago HOME & Garden; Julie Smith of Furniture Style, Janet Sabella of the Chicago Sun-Times and freelance writer Kelly Aiglon.
