Richard Frinier unveils new Sunbrella fabrics

Colors, designs reflect tropical resort living home

-- Casual Living, 8/3/2009 6:09:00 AM

Internationally acclaimed furniture designer Richard Frinier recently introduced three new collections of Sunbrella furniture fabrics, with plans in place to present his new designs to the broader casual furniture industry in the coming months. Inspired by the tropical island resort lifestyle, the designs reflect Frinier’s perspective on seaside living.

Known for his indoor/outdoor furnishings, textiles, lighting and accessories for the resort-at-home lifestyle, the 30-year home furnishings industry veteran finds it difficult to describe in words the peaceful solitude of tropical resort living. “It is my hope that the soft hand of the Sunbrella fabrics and the colors in these new collections will fully communicate the essence of seaside living and allow people to experience a bit of it for themselves,” Frinier said.

Frinier’s newest collections include coordinating fabric groups appropriately named South Pacific, Desert Island and Tropical Island. Available in a wide color palette that features new color interpretations of Frinier’s popular Sailcloth, Sasian and Samoa II fabrics, the collections include soothing neutrals, colors of the sea and sky and rich exotic colors of nature. Fabric designs that reflect the textures and moods of the tropics round out the offerings.

“Richard’s elevated sense of design continues to generate luxurious Sunbrella fabric designs that represent all that is elegant about outdoor living,” said Gina Wicker, design and creative director for Glen Raven Custom Fabrics, the makers of Sunbrella fabrics. “His latest collection of fabrics is no exception, with a distinct tropical island resort influence that invites you to relax and unwind.”

South Pacific
The South Pacific is known as a great island escape with a flair for the mysterious, offering visitors a chance to rejuvenate the spirit and reward the soul. Fabrics within the South Pacific collection capture the essence of surf, sand, sails and sky with great base cloths such as Sailcloth Salt, a popular canvas-like fabric and Sasian Sky, a construction referencing silk and linen in an alluring blue hue. New striped fabrics Seaboard Sky, a broadband stripe, and Timor Rice, a rhythmic, smaller stripe, bring a sense of balance to the collection. A geometric tatami mat weave pattern Samoa II Bermuda and the damask-like construction of the elegant ikat motif Balinesia Rice complete the collection.

Desert Island
Playing on the notion of days running into nights and warm trade winds sculpting sand dunes, the Desert Island collection is defined by its subdued, neutral color palette. Frinier’s base cloths Sailcloth Sahara and Sasian Fossil feature sand, taupe, sage and grey color influences. The wide stripe Spars Sahara and traditional, rhythmic stripe Moorea Dusk are attractive coordinating options. The patterns Bora Bora Cardamom, an elegant floral, and the batik Samoa II Moss bring dimension to the collection with intricate patterns.

Tropical Island
The tropical islands remain a favorite getaway complete with tropical sunrises, sunsets and time spent relaxing along the ocean or trekking for adventure. The Tropical Island collection carries a feeling of the exotic with its rich earthen and sunset hues. Sailcloth Sepia is an earthy dark brown-grey. The base cloth Sasian Wasabi offers contrast in a yellow-based green. Moorea Sunrise adds linear interest with its stunningly colorful band stripes. Spars Sepia blends the constructions of Sailcloth and canvas with a smaller stripe detail. Samoa II Sangria is a geometric tatami mat weave pattern in a vibrant colorway and is highly compatible with the new Bora Bora Cilantro, an exciting floralscape.

“Richard Frinier’s designs extend our Sunbrella fabric offerings with his luxurious take on tropical living,” Wicker said. “We look forward to the industry’s response to our growing collection of high-end performance fabrics.”
