American consumers are opting for vacation destinations closer to home, according to the latest Telescope National Shopper survey. The survey reports 21 % of American consumers say instead of spending a lot of money on a vacation, they are opting for a closer destination they can drive to and spend the day.
“This is the perfect opportunity for hotel, restaurant and amusement park operators to promote the 60 mile vacation,” which may or may not require an overnight stay,” said Kathy Juckett, CEO of Telescope Casual Furniture. “They can capture the consumer who is looking for a vacation atmosphere without the hefty price tag by creatively attracting them with incentives and smart alliances.”
Among Juckett’s recommendations for capturing these shoppers looking for a 60-mile vacation are:
1. Offer a family day rate for use of hotel or motel’s pools and facilities
2. Reward customers with gas coupons.
3. Consider creative alliances, for example, hotels and amusement parks can partner with local restaurants to offer value packages
4. Cruise lines can offer special day cruise packages or local pick-ups closer to home
The Telescope National Shopper Survey is a national Internet survey of 1,500 adults conducted independently April 3-13 by WSL Strategic Retail.
