Prepare for colder conditions
Prepare for colder conditions
-- Casual Living, 10/1/2008 12:00:00 AM
Last fall brought the warmest retail October in 43 years, and 94% of the country trended warmer than the year prior. Precipitation was down 9% nationally, but still trended wetter than average by 16%. The hurricane season remained very quiet with Hurricane Noel the only system during the month. The warm weather in October helped extend the outdoor patio season with shoppers seeking out any remaining clearance items.
In contrast, last month brought plenty of hurricane activity for the Gulf Coast and East Coast states. A much colder and drier October also is in store this year, especially across the heavily populated East Coast. Weather further west will trend warmer and generally wetter.
The dry weather across the East will be beneficial for retailers in open air malls and strip centers while increased rainfall out West will tend to favor enclosed malls. Dry weather leading up to Halloween across the East will help spur shoppers decorating their yards for Halloween.
