Hurricane expert to give 2009 forecast at National Hardware Show

Hurricane expert Philip Klotzbach will present the annual hurricane forecast on May 5 at the National Hardware Show in the Las Vegas Convention Center. 
  
Klotzbach, a research scientist in the Department of Atmospheric Science at Colorado State University, is the lead author on the Atlantic basin hurricane forecasts that he publishes along with Dr. William Gray.
       
The Atlantic hurricane season, which officially runs from June 1 to Nov. 30, averages 9.6 named storms, with 5.9 of them becoming hurricanes and 2.3 intense hurricanes.

“The Atlantic has seen a very large increase in major hurricanes during the 14-year period of 1995-2008 (average 3.9 per year) in comparison to the prior 25-year period of 1970-1994 (average 1.5 per year),” Klotzbach said.
   
“Dr. Klotzbach’s information on hurricane activity and probability of strike location is vital to many in the hardware and home center markets,” said Joe Kampschroer, vice president of retail sales and marketing of Northshore Power Systems, the exclusive licensee of Honeywell Generator products. “Information regarding the amount and degree of severity of projected hurricanes is vital information for this industry, as it prepares to respond to homeowners faced with those disasters, planning their disaster relief efforts and stocking up on key items like plywood, batteries, chain saws, and generators.”
      
“Dr. Klotzbach’s information is not only important to our industry, but timely as we enter the 2009 hurricane season starting June 1,” Kampschroer said.

Klotzbach will speak at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 5, in the Honeywell Generator booth #33334.
