Only 5% of the nearly 13,000 U.S. consumers answering Casual Living and HGTV's exclusive 2009 Outdoor Spaces survey currently have a home resort. Another 13% are in the process of creating one and a promising 79% of responding consumers would love to design one.
Our exclusive survey defined a home resort as an outdoor area that's been converted into a comfortable living space and is used for relaxing or entertaining at home.
A 44-year-old from South Carolina describes the importance of a home resort by saying, “Our home is the place we center ourselves. It's our peace of mind in these hard times and draws us nearer to each other. We love to share our space with our wonderful family and friends. It is our pride. We grill almost every weekend.”
What products and features would consumers include in their ideal home resort? Outdoor lighting topped the must-have list, cited by nearly four-fifths of respondents. Furniture products fared well, too – 78% of consumers would include an outdoor dining set and 76% want lounge chairs. Outdoor tables are on the shopping list of 65% of consumers.
