Expect warmer February this year

Jack Grum, vice president , Weather Trends International -- Casual Living, 2/1/2008 12:00:00 AM

Last year, bitter cold temperatures locked in across the nation for most of the month, producing the coldest retail February in 18 years and the snowiest in 13 years. The month started out with record-setting lake effect snows in New York and ended the month with a late season blizzard in the upper Midwest. A powerful snow and ice storm around Valentine's Day caused a travel nightmare across the Northeast with closed roads and flight delays.

February 2008 will be warmer than last year's record cold and bring above normal temperatures, especially around the Great Lakes and Northeast. Weak to moderate La Niña (cool Pacific Ocean) conditions will continue this month as well. The Great Lakes and Midwest will see much less snowfall this year while parts of the New England coast, Rockies and Pacific Northwest see heavier snows.

Spring-like weather will come two to three weeks earlier this year across the Deep South, which will help to kick off the outdoor deck and patio season.
