Gas grills, outdoor kitchens top choices
By Dana French -- Casual Living, 3/1/2009 12:00:00 AM
Nine out of 10 consumers own a grill and three-fourths of those grills are gas. That's the finding from the nearly 14,000 consumers responding to Casual Living and HGTV's exclusive 2008 Consumer Views Survey.
About two-thirds of grill owners have owned their grill for three or more years, leading to the promising fact that three-fourths of responding consumers plan to replace their grill between now and 2013. Specifically, 21% say they'll buy a replacement grill this year and 55% plan to buy a new one by 2013.
Gas grills will still be the No. 1 type as eight out of 10 consumers say their new grill will be powered by gas. One-fifth plan to spend less than $200 on the new grill; one-fourth have budgeted between $200 and $299; another fifth will spend between $300 and $399; and 35% plan to spend $400 or more on a replacement grill.
Our exclusive data also reveals that outdoor kitchens are on the rise. While only 2% of overall grills are currently part of an outdoor kitchen, 18% of consumers say their replacement grill will be incorporated into one. This trend is most popular in the Western and Southern parts of the country, where consumers plan for replacement grills to be part of an outdoor kitchen at a rate of 24% and 21% respectively.
Overall, 64% of consumers would first shop for a grill at a home improvement center. Half of consumers first shopping a home improvement center earn between $50,000 and $99,999 a year, while one-fourth have household incomes of $100,000 or more.
One out of 10 consumers would first shop a discount department center for a new grill, while 4% would first look online and 3% would go to a casual furniture, patio or pool specialist.
