Expect warmer trends compared to last year

Business outlook

Jack Grum -- Casual Living, 10/1/2009 12:00:00 AM

Temperature

With 60% of the nation trending warmer this month than last year, the outdoor living season should end on a more positive note.

Last October was the nation’s fifth coldest in more than 16 years, and the East Coast’s second coldest October in 16+ years. National snowfall was up +710% over the previous year with two record snow events — one in the northern Rocky Mountains and the other in the Northeast. Despite the record snowfall, national precipitation amounts were almost 10% below normal. The chilly, and in some places snowy, fall weather brought a rapid end to the outdoor living category season.

This month is projected to be warmer than last year, with 60% of the nation trending warmer than October 2008. The first two weeks of the month will be a very favorable period for summer clearance across the Western U.S.

Warmer weather at the end of the month across the Southeast may spur interest in patio and deck lighting accessories as the days grow shorter but the weather remains favorable to be outdoors. While the Great Lakes and Northeast will start the month on a chilly note, warmer and drier weather at the end of the month will be great news for Halloween sales and decorations.
