Design Chicago opens Oct. 12

The Design Center at the Merchandise Mart presents the interior design industry's most comprehensive and educational trade fair Oct. 12-14.
The three-day event welcomes the Midwest's leading interior design professionals for programming that is both educational and inspirational.
Design Chicago showcases the latest trends in interior design, featuring four renowned keynote presentations, eight innovative CEU accredited seminars and more than 70 new product introductions from Design Center showrooms. This year's featured presenters include Juan Montoya, Kathryn M. Ireland, Martyn Lawrence Bullard and Roger Thomas.
On Wednesday, Oct. 12, from 5:30-7 p.m., the Design Center will honor four rising stars at this year's Ones to Watch reception at Nick's Fishmarket located on the 1st floor of The Merchandise Mart. The Ones to Watch are selected by Design Center showrooms and feature designers that have demonstrated creativity, originality and overall great design. This fabulous cocktail reception will feature an award ceremony and networking among industry leaders and professionals.
In celebration of Chicago Artists Month, a citywide collaboration effort showcasing Chicago visual artists and their work throughout October, Design Chicago will host Showroom Art Exhibits and an Artist Meet-and-Greet, Friday, Oct. 14, from noon-5 p.m. in participating showrooms. The goal of this initiative is to raise awareness of the extraordinary quality and depth of the city's visual arts community.
In addition, the Design Center will host Student Programming on Friday, Oct. 14. The day's events include a panel discussion with design icon Holly Hunt, who will discuss "Building a Brand," as well as a guided tour of her eponymous showroom. The day concludes with portfolio reviews hosted in the Design Center showrooms.
"We are excited to host Design Chicago as it draws a talented group of design icons, industry leaders and designer professionals", said Julia Chappell, managing marketing director, MMPI. "Through the keynote presentations, CEU accredited seminars, guest lectures and new product introductions, we intend to provide designers with the business know-how and inspiration to keep up with the constantly evolving marketplace."

11:30 AM - Luncheon Presentation
The Basics of Specifying Automated Window Coverings by Jeff Sinclair
This course provides a definition of automation, a guide for the application of motorization to window coverings, and how to choose the appropriate automation function on any given system. Explore a variety of applications and learn detailed explanations of each solution and its benefits. Also learn the information required by the various trades involved in an automated installation including the requirements of the window covering manufacturer.
2:30 PM - Three Centuries of Color by Mary Hoffman
Throughout history colors move in and out of popularity which is especially notable in fashion and homes. Changing taste, influence of world events, advances in technology, cultural landscape and the social climate help define the personality of specific periods. Benjamin Moore looks at the major events of each decade from 1880-2000 to see how events shaped the color palette of those decades.
4 PM - The Height of Luxury: The Rise of Art Deco and Haute Couture by Lee Russ
This course explores the experimentation and ultimately evolution that fostered creativity in the years before WWII. Art Deco was not only the last great luxury style, but also a movement across any number of creative disciplines-from art to literature, furniture, philosophy and of course fashion. Through striking images and anecdotes, this program examines how the giants of the era inspired the world-and one another.

Financial Management for Interior Design Firms by Rick Gilman
Learn how to integrate both the design and financial aspects of the design trade to grow a successful business. During this captivating seminar, Gilman will discuss a variety of financial topics including technology and how to incorporate it into your business, understanding taxation, budgeting and understating profitability.
2:30 PM - 20th & 21st Century Handcrafted Wall covering by Joyce Romanoff
From block printing, hand painting, inlaid materials, natural fibers, fine art and more, explore the world of handcrafted wallcoverings and reveal how they have evolved. Moreover learn the best ways to use wallcoverings in design and examine the various methods of manufacturing including a live demo.
4 PM - Specifying Custom Products by Jobi Blachy
Join the President of EF+LM as he describes the process of partnering with a workroom, including the guidelines and guardrails of custom furniture design. During the seminar, EF+LM will accept lounge chair designs. The winning design will be added to their line and named after the designer! Cocktail reception to follow in suite 1870A.

Psychology of Color by Susan Stokis
Color is considered a powerful design tool in the built environment. Decisions related to color are best made with scientific knowledge of the attributes of color. This course highlights how perception of color directs human response in behavior and emotion. It demonstrates how perception is influenced by personal experiences and cultural identifications. Following the presentation visit suite 1825 for a dessert reception and meet and greet with Stokis.
2 PM - Metallics, Plasters and Faux Demystified by Ed Mattingly
Understand how to effectively specify and utilize the newest technologies in professional decorative coatings related to Metallics, Plasters, Glazes and Clearcoats. We will take you from design inspiration-to sampling and approval-to installation with our innovative, "Real Wall" Solutions for the professional specifier.
