Big Green Egg wins green nod

Dai-Tile Mexico ceramics manufacturing facility gets international recognition

-- Casual Living, 5/14/2010 12:20:00 PM

Ceramic kamado and grill manufacturer Big Green Egg announces the awarding of ISO 14000 certification for its Dal-Tile, Mexico, ceramics manufacturing facility.

ISO 14001 2004 certification by the voluntary International Standards Organization means that the manufacturing facilities in Monterrey, Mexico has an approved Environmental Management System in place that allows the company to: identify and control its environmental performance; continually improve that performance; implement a systematic approach in achieving environmental objectives and demonstrate those objectives have been met.

The purpose of this standard is to help protect the environment, to prevent pollution and to improve a company’s environmental performance.

“Big Green Egg owners are passionately loyal to our products and our company,” said Jodi Burson, Big Green Egg marketing manager. “We consider them to be an extended family, and knowing that our manufacturing facilities are doing everything possible to keep the environment and our product safe for them is vitally important to us.”

The Big Green Egg is fueled by natural lump charcoal, which it consumes sparingly. Much of the charcoal remains after cooking so its re-use factor makes the product fuel and cost-efficient as well as versatile. It is weather-impervious and its patented ceramic material keeps the outside surface far cooler than any gas grill. In a marketing environment of planned product obsolescence, Big Green Egg’s ceramic parts come with a lifetime guarantee against damage from normal use.

“We have always been proud of the low impact our product has on the environment, beginning with the use of natural lump charcoal, which is a renewable fuel source that contains no added chemicals,” said Jim Nufer, Big Green Egg vice president and general manager. “Now, in addition, this certification verifies that in working to achieve their environmental goals, our manufacturing facility applies the highest internationally recognized standards. We consider it a privilege to be associated with Dai-Tile Corp.”

Dai-Tile, a Dallas-based division of Mohawk Industries, is North America’s largest manufacturer, distributor and marketer of ceramic tile, natural stone and kiln refractories.

Dai-Tile Mexico had previously been awarded the ISO 9000 certification, which is the globally implemented standard for providing assurance about the ability to satisfy quality requirements and to enhance customer satisfaction in supplier-customer relationships. The company also recently received another award for Corporate Social Accountability, which emphasizes business ethics, links with the community, environment and quality of life.
