Troy, NC — Lou H. Webster, former director of product development and design
for Capel Inc., has formed Lou Webster Design to provide design services to
U.S.-based and international companies in the area rug, floor covering,
fabrics and home furnishing industries.
Webster is a summa cum laude graduate of N.C. State University, where she
earned a bachelor's degree in environmental design - fibers and surface
design, with a minor in apparel and textile management. She also has a
master's degree in fine arts/ fibers from Colorado State University. Webster
studied knitted and woven constructions as an exchange student at the
Scottish College of Textiles. Webster has used her design skills in both
floor coverings and upholstery fabrics.
Businesses that design, manufacture or market floor coverings, upholstery or
textiles can take advantage of Webster's training and 16 years of experience
with household brands in the U.S. home furnishings marketplace. Webster's
experience goes beyond design to include tracking consumer fashion trends,
product innovation and strategic marketing.
At Capel, Webster worked in design, new product development, manufacturing
and management in the area rug and commercial floor industries. Her
experience included monitoring and recording current lifestyle, fashion,
color and design trends, which culminated in her founding of the Capel Color
and Trend Report as a marketing and sales training tool.
Webster established the Capel Rug Design Competition in collaboration with
NCSU College of Design to both promote product development and identify
emerging talent in the industry. She collaborated with manufacturing and the
NCSU Industrial Extension Service to improve efficiency through the
introduction of lean principles.
Before joining Capel and working within the upholstery fabric segment,
Webster worked in several different design roles for Milliken & Company. Her
responsibilities there included work as a design manager for knitted and
woven upholstery fabrics, which centered on researching style trends and
setting color palettes for all new collections. Within the carpet segment,
Webster developed new products for broadloom and carpet tile, and led a team
responsible for identifying color needs for hospitality, residential and
contract carpets.
Lou Webster Design is based in Troy, N.C. and can be contacted at (910)
