Macy's expands sustainability program

Adds four new efforts to reduce energy costs

Casual Living Staff -- Casual Living, 10/12/2010 3:04:50 PM

Macy's Inc. is adding four new efforts to its drive to reduce energy consumption and waste.

The company has started construction of a high-efficiency solar power system on the roof of its Goodyear, Ariz., distribution center and recently completed a similar project at its distribution center in City of Industry,
Calif. Macy's now hosts solar power panels on the roofs of 37 of its facilities, with a goal of expanding renewable energy sources 15% to 25% by 2013.

Macy's is also replacing about 117,000 traditional incandescent light bulbs in 86 Macy's stores with new LED bulbs that use about 73% less energy.

Finally, Macy's is replacing bottled water in its office facilities with water filtration units to reduce the company's impact on the waste stream.

"Macy's Inc. remains committed to sustainability," said Tom Cole, chief administrative officer. "We must, however, operate within the bounds of good business decision-making so that each action we take is measurable, sustainable, enduring and contributes to the efficient operation of our company."
