RALEIGH, N.C. — In 1917, A. Leon Capel realized nearly every family could use a good braided rug and transformed his Gee-Haw Plowline company into what is now America's oldest and largest privately owned importer and manufacturer of area rugs. Ninety-three years later, the North Carolina Museum of History recognized Capel Rugs' distinguished history as a leading North Carolina manufacturer by accepting one of Capel's braided rugs into its permanent artifact collection.

Songbird
A braided Songbird rug, in the colorway blue jay, was added to the museum's collection during a special ceremony at N.C. State University's Centennial Campus on Thurs., Jan. 20.
"All of us at Capel Rugs feel incredibly honored to have one of our rugs added to the North Carolina Museum of History," said Capel Rugs Director of Administration Mary Clara Capel. "We strive to reflect our history of superior design and outstanding quality with every rug we make and it is exciting to receive recognition for that commitment."
Capel Rugs originally presented the Songbird rug as a feature item in the NCSU-Industrial Extension Service's "Manufacturing Makes It Real" Tour, a week-long celebration of the high-quality and competitive spirit of North Carolina manufacturers that took place last year. About a dozen items from that tour, including the Songbird rug, were selected by the North Carolina Museum of History to be added to its collection.
The North Carolina Museum of History celebrates North Carolina's past, present and future by collecting and preserving artifacts and other materials relating to the state's history and heritage, and provides a place to explore, learn and enjoy programs, events and exhibitions. It is located at 5 East Edenton St. (between Salisbury and Wilmington Streets) in downtown Raleigh. To learn more, visit ncmuseumofhistory.org.
By having their products in the museum's collection, Capel Rugs and the other donors will represent North Carolina's 10,000 manufacturers and their 500,000 employees. Manufacturing is the largest single contributor to the state economy, and North Carolina is the ninth-largest manufacturing state in the country.
Songbird

The durable wool-blend construction is reversible for twice the wear. Songbird area rugs are made in the United States and are available in the colorways gold finch, parakeet, blue jay and cardinal. A 5x8 rug may retail for $339.
