Executive director of ASID to retire in Oct. 2011

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Michael Alin, executive director of the American Society of Interior Designers, will retire on Oct. 1, 2011, after more than 20 years with the Society. Alin announced his decision at the ASID board of directors meeting in January.

Alin joined ASID in late 1990 as deputy executive director and took on the responsibility of shepherding the Society's strategic planning and managing membership operations. He became executive director in May of 1998.

"It has been an absolutely fabulous run for me," Alin said. "I have been privileged to work with some great and visionary volunteer leaders who always looked ahead to where the interior design profession and ASID needed to go. The Society's leadership can take pride in its contributions to the growing success of the profession and to its accepted place among other professions in the built environment."

When Alin joined ASID, there were 22,000 members that included designers, industry partners and students. Today, the Society has more than 36,000 members, even after the economic crisis of the past two years.

"Michael Alin has continually provided ASID with strong leadership, infinite wisdom and his inexhaustible passion in support of our vision and values, which has helped to make the Society the leading voice of the interior design profession," said Michael A. Thomas, FASID, ASID president. "The officers and board of directors extend our sincere appreciation and gratitude to Michael for a job well done."

"I leave the Society with a very strong and experienced staff who care as passionately as I do for the success of ASID's members," Alin said. "My working career spans six decades, and my wife Ann and I are looking forward to some additional time for travel and to spend more time with friends and family. We will be moving to Annapolis, Md., and, even after formally retiring, I hope that there will be opportunities to continue to serve ASID."
