Cold weather to hit the East first, while the West remains milder, drier longer

Casual Living Staff -- Casual Living, 11/3/2011 7:29:56 AM

November 2010 brought cooler temperatures than the prior year for 67% of the country. Following a milder-than-normal October, last November's colder temperatures helped get consumers in the winter mindset and drove demand for cold-weather categories and holiday décor. Snowfall was the greatest in 10 years with a strong storm in the upper Midwest and another one in the mountains of the West. At the same time, dry weather in South Texas and the Southeast Coast prolonged demand for the outdoor living category.
November 2011 will be cooler-than-normal in the East, while the West will be milder-than-normal. This month will begin with mild conditions in the East and cool conditions in the West. As the month progresses, however, the East will turn increasingly cooler and wetter, while weather in the West will become milder and drier. Milder and drier weather in the West will benefit outdoor-living categories. A potential snowstorm could boost holiday décor interest in the Plains near the second week of November, while another period of snow is possible across the Midwest, Great Lakes and interior Northeast just before Thanksgiving.
