Troutman Chair Company is providing rocking chairs for a Waterbury Hospital study of rocking as part of the recovery process for surgical patients.
Based in Waterbury, Conn., Waterbury Hospital is a Yale University-affiliated hospital program. Dr. Scott Kurtzman, director of the General Surgery Residency Program, will run the study through his department.
Kurtzman's study will compare the recovery rates of patients who have undergone abdominal operations and are placed in rocking chairs while recovering versus patients who recover using standard hospital chairs. Kurtzman's hypothesis is that patients using the rocking chair will:
1) Have quicker return of bowel function
2) Require less narcotic analgesia
3) Have better mood and anxiety scores
4) Have fewer Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), and
5) Have a shorter length of stay
For more information on earlier studies about the healthful benefits of rocking, visit rockingchairtherapy.org. Additionally, a booklet published by Troutman Chair, titled "Rocking Chairs, The Only Piece of Furniture Where Bodies in Motion Tend to Stay at Rest," highlights some of these studies.
