NEW YORK, N.Y. — As the doors of the 40th Annual Kips Bay Decorator Show House open at the Aldyn at 60 Riverside Blvd., signature pieces from Royal Botania will draw guests back out - to the building's North Terrace, that is.
Known for its outdoor luxury furnishings, the Belgian brand's Flexy 360 extendable table, Ninix 55 dining chairs, and Little-L loungers and side tables help set the regal scene. Designed by Gunn Landscape Architecture and Vert Gardens, the oversized urban garden is meant to invoke both the calm and chaos that is emblematic of New York City.
"To have our furnishings selected by Gunn and Vert for such a prestigious event is an absolute honor," said Thierry Herbert, president of Royal Botania USA. "With their straight lines and soft features, I think the three chosen collections work well to showcase the design team's vision for the space."
The show house event brings together top designers to transform a luxury Manhattan home into an elegant exhibition of furnishings, art and technology and raises money for the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club.
The penthouse property offers expansive views of the Hudson River and the neighborhood of new-construction high rises. For just the right amount of privacy, the design team framed the North Terrace with lush evergreens. They carefully selected plants and products that would stand up to the harsh ecosystem and wind.
Form and function were integral to specification. With its hidden leaf, the sleek Flexy table can easily expand to serve from eight to 12 guests. It consists of a teak top and stainless steel frame. Dapper and durable, the chairs from the Ninix collection feature a semi-transparent, UV-resistant batyline seat that won't fade and a stainless steel frame that won't rust. Lastly, the crisp white Little-L loungers - equipped with wheels for easy navigation around the pool - are made of powder-coated aluminum and batyline.
Royal Botania's warm weather wares are in good company as additional pieces from D'Apostrophe, Massant, Eric Slayton, Gaviero Umami, Pennoyer Newman, Telescopes of Vermont and RoofDeck Solutions that outfit the terrace.
One of the top design events each year, the 2012 Kips Bay Decorator's Show House is celebrating its 40th anniversary. Started by a women's committee in 1973, the Decorator Show House raises funds for after-school enrichment programs for New York City children. Over the past four decades, the show has grown into a prestigious destination for designers and enthusiasts alike, and has raised more than $17 million, helping make the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club an exemplary leader of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
The 2012 Kips Bay Decorator's Show House takes place at the Aldyn at 60 Riverside Blvd from May 16 to June 14 on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays & Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Sundays, noon to 5 p.m.
