HPBA hires Richard Ali as director of government affairs

Casual Living Staff -- Casual Living, 6/25/2012 1:44:45 PM

ARLINGTON, Va. - The Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association has appointed Richard Ali as its director of government affairs, starting July 2.

Formerly with the lobbying firm Capital Action Network, Ali brings a wealth of association lobbying to HPBA.

"Rich's extensive background in lobbying, federal legislative and regulatory activities and codes and standards is exactly what we were looking for to head our government affairs department," said Jack Goldman, president and CEO of HPBA. "We are currently involved in several regulatory challenges and his experience will help us immensely."

Ali will head up the department staff of four. His experience includes positions as director of government affairs at The Irrigation Association, the National Spa & Pool Institute and the National Association of the Remodeling Industry and as director of political affairs at the Associated Builders & Contractors.

Ali's experience also includes developing grassroots campaigns, creating coalitions and developing a national consumer awareness program. His experience in codes and standards issues will be valuable as HPBA and the fireplace industry negotiate new green building codes and efficiency standards. Ali graduated magna cum laude from Ohio University in political science/journalism.

Based in Arlington, Va., HPBA is the North American industry association for manufacturers, retailers, distributors, representatives, service firms and allied associates for all types of hearth, barbecue and patio appliances, fuels and accessories. The association provides professional member services and industry support in education, statistics, government relations, marketing, advertising and consumer education. There are more than 2,500 members in the HPBA.
