Casual exhibitors showcase outdoor style in Sin City

From the courtyard to the halls of the World Market Center, outdoor luxury made its mark at the winter Las Vegas Market, held Jan. 28-Feb. 1. Popular brands such as Tommy Bahama and Panama Jack made a splash on the West Coast, while other notable names in casual showcased outdoor furniture with sleek contemporary forms and indoor looks made their way outside.
The World Market Center courtyard featured a host of stylish outdoor arrangements, including vibrant rugs by Loloi and collections from the Tommy Bahama Outdoor Living line by Lexington Home Brands.
The winter Las Vegas Market marked the West Coast debut of Tommy Bahama Outdoor Living, which includes eight lifestyle collections with more than 150 designs. Lexington Home Brands showcased the collection along with its other core brands - including Lexington, Tommy Bahama Home, Sligh, Henry Link Trading Co. and Aquarius - in an expanded 50,000-sq.-ft . showroom in Building B.
Lexington Home Brands President and CEO Phil Haney said the company's first market in the new space was a successful one, with opening day traffic up 40% over January 2012.
"Response to Tommy Bahama Outdoor Living has been so exciting with indoor retailers, outdoor specialists in the category and especially the design community," Haney said. "Tommy Bahama Outdoor Living brings a sense of style to the category that separates us from other vendors. Based on our award-winning designs and our selection of over 175 Sunbrella fabrics, fringes and trims, along with multiple custom top options, we combine ‘inside style' with ‘outside performance and durability.'"
Haney said response to the whole line has been positive, but the Kingstown, Ocean Club and Island Estate-Veranda collections were particularly popular.
"The launch of Tommy Bahama Outdoor Living at Lexington Home Brands allows us to complete the product design opportunities for the retail consumer," Haney said. "They can seamlessly continue their Tommy Bahama ‘Life is One Long Weekend' lifestyle throughout their home, both inside and out, and for our traditional indoor retailers, it offers up an expanded and incremental business opportunity or said another way, more profitable sales."
Pelican Reef saw continued success with its Panama Jack Outdoor collection, on display in Building C. The Las Vegas Market came on the heels of Pelican Reef announcing the opening of a California warehouse and distribution center, which will ship best-selling Panama Jack Outdoor collections to West Coast customers.
"With the opening of our West Coast warehouse, we needed to have a presence in Las Vegas, and it's been a great show," said Allen Calzadilla, president of Pelican Reef.
The company's showroom conveyed the laid-back mentality of the Panama Jack brand, complete with colorful beach towels, bicycles and accessories. Calzadilla said attendees responded positively to the line's affordable price point.
"Best-sellers for us have been the swivel barstools, anything with motion," he said. "It's simple, easy, good quality."
Sleek, modern design was a recurring theme among the market's outdoor exhibitors. Lawrence Wong, senior sales executive at Ratana Home & Floral, said the company's West Coast buyers tend to be drawn to more contemporary styles.
The showroom featured several of Ratana's contemporary collections at the front of the space, such as the curved, conversation-friendly Palm Harbor sectional and the modular Brisbane Collection, which Wong said is featured in several Las Vegas restaurants.
"This showroom is really set up for the West Coast market," he said.
Ratana also prominently displayed its commercial chairs, available in a variety of styles and finishes for the hospitality market. "This is an important section because they don't just buy one or two, they buy 100 or 200," Wong said.
Skyline Design's space in Building C also reflected a modern aesthetic, with the debut of seating, dining and occasional collections by celebrity designer Dann Foley.
"It's his ideal of having something bigger and broader," said Daniel Guelbart, sales coordinator for Skyline Design. "We have pieces that are Egyptian- themed, Grecian-theme - very traditional styles with contemporary flair. ... We don't do anything on a small scale, and he's larger than life."
Brown Jordan showcased "a mixture of new product and classic sellers" in the Robert Allen-Beacon Hill showroom, including the elegantly curved Papillon sofa, sleek Parkway chaise and contemporary woven Fusion Collection.
"Fusion is a very popular group for Brown Jordan," said Marty Berk, Brown Jordan sales representative. "It's a top seller and has been for many years. It has a beautiful bronze weave."
Sunset West introduced several additions to its existing lines in its permanent showroom on the ground floor of Building B. CEO Wes Stewart said the Coronado and Montecito collections continue to sell well, and response to introductions to the Solana Collection was enthusiastic.
"People have been very interested in the curve and modularity of it," Stewart said.
Outdoor rug offerings also continued to expand in Las Vegas. Capel added new colorways to its Hammock line of indoor/outdoor rugs, knitted and braided in North Carolina from polypropylene.
"[Hammock] was doing so well we added a new Silver Shadow colorway, a Linen and a Lambswool," said Cameron Capel, VP of national accounts at Capel. "We continue to add new fabrics to our Creative Concepts line." The Creative Concepts program allows customers to choose a high-performance olefin base and a fabric border for a unique custom design.
Sphinx by Oriental Weavers kicked off the market with a grand opening celebration for its new showroom in Building C, which at 10,000 square feet is 50% larger than its previous space. In the indoor/outdoor category, Marketing Director Aaron Gray said buyers were particularly drawn to the colorful new Lagos line.
"Lagos has been a huge hit for this market," he said. "Everywhere we've shown, it feels like it's right on trend. People have also really responded to the new space and how open it is."
