GLEN RAVEN, N.C. - Glen Raven Custom Fabrics announced the expanded conformance of its Sunbrella Contract fabrics under the NSF/ANSI 336 Sustainability Assessment.
More than 35 patterns in the Sunbrella Contract fabric line, including those fabrics with Defiance treatment, have been certified at the Silver level, making it the first company to offer such a broad range of compliant fabrics, according to a press release.
The company first declared compliance of two of its fabrics - a filling-face twill and plain-weave canvas - under the standard in 2012, the first company to do so since the Association of Contract Textiles (ACT) instituted the universal measurement and language for sustainability.
"The broadening of our Silver-level compliance was a long-range effort that included improving the actual chemistry of our fiber to bring it into conformance with NSF 336 and improve on a fabric already known for its extreme durability and styling," said John Gant, manager of sustainable development for Glen Raven Custom Fabrics, and a member of the NSF Joint Committee dedicated to formalizing the standard. "These efforts demonstrate Glen Raven's commitment to sustainability within the entire supply chain, ultimately resulting in a better product for the marketplace."
ACT recognized the need for the standard in 2003 and initiated collaboration with GreenBlue for the framework and with NSF International as the standards-writing organization. NSF assembled more than 75 member organizations and stakeholders to ensure the creation of the multi-attribute standard, which the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) published in March 2011.
The NSF/ANSI 336 Standard is a voluntary sustainability assessment tool that encompasses a range of environmental issues, including fabric sourcing, safety of materials, water conservation and water quality, energy, recycling practices, air quality in manufacturing and social accountability.
"The work required to achieve this conformance does not happen overnight," said Allen Hawks, contract market manager for Glen Raven Custom Fabrics. "It is a multi-year, multi-team effort that involves in-depth testing and monitoring. We consider it an accomplishment in line with the innovation that has driven Glen Raven to great heights within the textile industry and beyond."
Sunbrella Contract fabrics are currently available through a number of contract jobbers serving the hospitality and healthcare markets, including Carnegie, CF Stinson, Designtex, HBF Textiles, Maharam, Pallas Textiles, Robert Allen Contract and Sina Pearson Textiles.
