$170 million — that's the 2009 projected retail sales for lounge chairs, hammocks, benches, rockers and gliders — basically, all seating products not included as a part of a dining set or conversation group.
Wal-Mart, Target and Kmart, along with other discounters such as Fred Meyer, Meijer and Big Lots, own 41% of the other seating market. And, home improvement centers comprise an estimated 27% of category sales.
Specialty stores, including casual furniture stores, pool and spa specialists and hearth and patio stores are expected to bring in $30 million in other seating sales this year, a decrease of 8.6% from 2008 channel sales of $33 million.
Motion is proving to be a growing trend for this catch-all seating category. In a 2009 industry outlook survey among casual furniture vendors, motion and action products were stated as one of the hottest and fastest-growing.
