Women at the Grill

August 19, 2009

With the outdoor entertaining and grilling season still going strong, I want to share these comments I received from Bruce Bjorkman, Traeger Pellet Grills’ marketing director, in response to Donna Myers’ latest grill column. He makes a strong case for pellet grills and why women grill customers would want them.

In Bjorkman’s words: I read with interest Donna Myers’ column concerning women and grill purchases, and say that I agree with a number of the points she made in the article. However, I am very disappointed that there was no mention of pellet grills as being a viable alternative to gas or charcoal grills.

In the decade that I’ve worked for Traeger as director of marketing, I have personally encountered a tremendous number of female grillers who prefer our wood pellet-fired grills for two primary reasons: 1) Safety — they are TERRIFIED of gas grills, and rightly should be. 2) Ease of use — as a grill, smoker, wood-fired oven or barbecue. Women LOVE Traeger grills because they are so user friendly. You don’t get your hands dirty. You don’t have to mess with a flammable fuel — just fill the pellet hopper, plug it in to a 110 outlet and cook away. I believe retailers MUST pay attention to the fact that there are so many households in the U.S. headed by women. To ignore them is to give up thousands of dollars in potential sales.

I realize all this, but there is ahonter brand of smoker grill made here, almost entirely of USA made parts and materials, whereas the chinese metals and paints are questionable at best, and their quality is sub par american' cars have been multi cultural for many years now, and don't have a problem with that in fact, we own 3 toyotas but will not knowingly purchase a chinese made product, if there is an alternative

Two points I will make here.. First of all what is the otsdiue temperature? Where do you live? A lot of people grill in freezing or below freezing temperatures and expect the same performance as on days in the summertime. A grill has a lot of surface area that is giving up heat if you are in a cold part of the country. The other thing I'm going to put forward here is going to start a big argument! I know that! Well, bring it on! Natural gas has less btu's than propane does. It is not going to put out as much heat on NG as it did on propane. I know you installed a conversion kit that changed the orifice size, and possibly even the controls, but the burner is probably the very same one. The size of the burner holes and surface area of the burner have not changed. The heat will be slightly less. By the way, when you made the conversion, did you adjust the air doors on the burner near where the burner tubes meet the controls. You need to adjust that so the flame is nice and blue and not dancing off of the burner. A blue flame is hot. A yellow flame is cool in comparison
