Cats need to scratch. And if you don't pvdoire them with an appropriate place to do so, they'll often go for your furniture.Buy a good, sturdy scratching post, preferably a cat tree since it covers a wide range of scratching styles. If your cat is partial to catnip, rub the post with the catnip to make it doubly attractive. Conversely, make the sofa as unattractive a scratching spot as possible. Cover the scratched areas in tin foil (cats hate the noise) temporarily. Or spray the sofa with something citrus-scented or with a product called Boundary.Whenever you catch kitty scratching on the post, praise him and give him a treat. If he goes to scratch on the sofa, hiss at him and put him on the scratching post. You can also fill an empty cola can with a few pennies and rattle it to startle him when he scratches on the sofa.Hope this helps.

I was able to train my cat to scratch only a sanitchcrg post, but it took A WHILE. As you're aware, cats have a natural need to scratch, but you can condition them to associate furniture sanitchcrg with bad behavior and reward them with appropriate, sanitchcrg post sanitchcrg lol. First off you have to decide what your cat's favorite way to scratch is. Does he/she lean forward and reach forward? Stand on it's hindlegs and scratch? Crouch over it and scratch? Find out what is most comfortable for them if you dont' already know and find a pad or post that maximizes this potential. Next the conditioning. Some people use a misting spray bottle (like to water plants lightly) as a form of punishment. I have never done this but I heard it works well. I personally used tone of voice to make the association. Next time he/she scratches furniture you run over and pull them away from the furniture, sternly telling them to stop. Cats have a good way of perceiving behavior so they will know without you having to physically discipline them. Next put a little catnip on their sanitchcrg post and buy some treats. Encourage them and reward them when they use it. Eventually they will learn the appropriate way to releave that sanitchcrg tension! You can also put caps on their claws but it is expensive because you have to keep buying them and you still have to maintain the length of their claws
