“D” is for Design
Strolling the halls of Chicago’s ICFA Preview Show last month, it was impossible not to feel the heavy influence of designers on the outdoor category.
The 14th floor of The Mart is known as the designer’s level, and it’s where we found new, fully upholstered sofas at both Century Furniture and Anacara. “Outdoor upholstery won’t make it in the general retailer world,” predicts Deborah Dill, vice president, Anacara. “It’s a designer-placed piece.”
On the 15th floor, both Castelle and Gloster displayed their designer collections front and center. Barclay Butera debuted his outdoor collection for Castelle at the April High Point Market, so Chicago was seeing it for the first time.
Not to be outdone, Gloster showcased its new Atmosphere collection by Danish industrial designer Cecilie Manz. Known for working with the likes of Bang & Olufsen, Manz’s Gloster line marks her first foray into the outdoors—and what a debut! Her teak pieces are so light and airy; Atmosphere is a good name for them.
When it comes to renowned interior designer Libby Langdon, what hasn’t she designed for the outdoors?
We caught up with her in the NorthCape showroom, chock-a-block with her new furniture collections, aglow with her new Crystorama outdoor lighting, and lined with her new outdoor rugs for Kas. Her new tagline? She jokingly calls it, “Libby Outdoor Decor: Ceiling to Floor.”
By now, you’ve probably had a chance to check out our annual Designers issue. Must-reads include a recap of our first-ever Designer Workshop held at Furnitureland South, a behind-the-scenes interview with the Sunbrella design team, our 2017 Casual Designers research sponsored by Castelle and full coverage of the Chicago Pre-Market.
We also recently walked the casual floors at the World Market Center during the Las Vegas Market. We’ll give you all the scoop on what we saw in our market report in the September issue.
But for now, it’s still August. It’s hot. It’s sticky. Go shake a frosty libation and stretch out in your chaise longue poolside. Let’s Keep It Casual!
